Other articles where The Stonebreakers is discussed: Gustave Courbet: The development of Realism: …two of his greatest paintings: The Stonebreakers and Burial at Ornans. Painted in 1849, The Stonebreakers is a realistic rendering of two figures doing physical labour in a barren rural setting. Context: Submitted to the Parisian Salon of 1850-1851 as a reaction to the labor unrest of 1848 (people had demanded better working conditions.) Courbet's realist imagery—from the laborers of the The Stonebreakers of 1849–50 (now lost) to the rural bourgeoisie of Ornans—was almost immediately politicized by his contemporaries.

Gustave Courbet’s painting, The Stonebreakers is an example of realism in nineteenth century Europe. It depicts two figures working to break and remove stone from a road. One is a young boy who seems to be struggling to hold a rock and the other is an elder man who seems to old to be doing such hard work. This painting communicates the tough lives experienced by many in the countryside. We see a huge rock being carried, whilst another man grinds down these into stones. The clothing and boots are rugged, giving an impression of being uncomfortable, though necessary for this type of gruelling manual labour. In The Stonebreakers-1849, the most important element is not mere truthfulness in representing nature, but the distinctive ways in which he transformed what he saw.
